How to claim

The usual steps, as a general checklist. The state's exact steps: Not verified

  1. File on the official site, from the record page. It carries the property ID.
  2. Have a government photo ID ready.
  3. Have proof of the address shown on the record, such as an old bill, a lease or a tax form. A record at an old address is normal.
  4. If an SSN is asked for, enter it only on the official domain.
  5. Some states want a notarized form above an amount. Look for that on the claim page.
  6. Claims take weeks, not days. Keep the claim number.
  7. Claiming is free. If anyone asks for a fee, you don't need them.

If the owner died

If the owner died, the state usually asks for a death certificate, proof of your relationship, and probate papers or a small-estate affidavit. Heir form: not verified

A business

For a business, the state usually asks for an officer’s authority on letterhead, the EIN if it asks for one, and proof of the business address.

A living relative

If the owner is alive, they usually file the claim themselves. Otherwise you need their power of attorney.
